Causes of Hair Loss
![]() |
Many people experience the problem of excessive hair loss. There are many different causes of hair loss, and many different ways to treat the problem. If you're losing hair, the first thing you should do is visit your doctor. After a thorough examination, your doctor will determine why you're experiencing the problem. Hair loss and baldness can be caused by a variety of different factors, as described below.
Diet
Malnutrition is one cause of excessive hair loss. If your hair loss is due to a poor diet, then you need to seek medical attention immediately. When people aren't getting the vitamins and nutrients they need to thrive, hair may fall out in patchy clumps. By treating the dietary issue, you can treat the excessive shedding as well. This type of hair loss frequently accompanies anorexia, a dangerous and potentially life threatening disease.
Medication
Certain types of medications can cause excessive hair loss in some people. Anticoagulants, birth control pills, and antidepressants are examples of prescription drugs that can cause you to lose hair in larger than normal quantities. Your doctor may be able to change your prescription to one that doesn't cause hair loss, so be sure to ask!
Stress
Stress can be another issue that leads to hair loss. While we all experience stress now and then, being stressed all the time can be hazardous to your health. If your doctor determines that your hair loss may be due to stress, you'll need to make some lifestyle changes. If you can't eliminate the source of your stress, you will need to learn healthy coping strategies to manage the problem.
Illness
If you've been ill, you may find that your hair falls out. This is a fairly normal reaction to the stress placed on the body from physical or even mental illness. By treating your illness with rest, vitamins, or prescription medicines as needed, you can easily remedy your hair loss.
Hormones
Hormonal imbalances can also cause hair loss. Pregnancy and thyroid problems are two conditions that may lead to the excessive shedding of hair. As you may already know, when the hormonal imbalance is remedied, so is the hair loss.
Hair Styling
Sometimes, styling your hair can cause excess hair loss. Tight elastics, perms, hair dye, hot rollers and rough brushing are all culprits. If you find that your hairstyling habits are causing you to shed like crazy, then treat your hair more gently. Hot oil or deep conditioning treatments performed at least once a week can also help minimize the damage done by styling.
Genetics
This is probably one of the causes of hair loss that people dread the most. If baldness or thinning hair runs in your family, you're more inclined to experience it yourself. Thankfully, however, your doctor can recommend a variety of prescription and over the counter remedies to treat the problem.
