A Basic Guide to Hair Loss Prevention
![]() |
Are you concerned about hair loss? Many people are. After all, a healthy head of hair is one of our society's most valued traits. While most cases of hair loss are genetic in nature, there are some reasons why individuals not predisposed to hair loss may experience it. Here are some of the most common non-genetic causes of hair loss, and some basic tips for hair loss prevention.
Eat a Healthy Diet
People suffering from vitamin deficiencies often suffer from hair loss as well. If you think your excessive hair loss may be due to your diet, you'll want to take steps to improve the issue. Be sure to eat lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, and healthy dairy. It's also a good idea to take a multivitamin every day. If you're having problems eating, see your doctor immediately because you may be suffering from a dangerous disease like anorexia or bulimia.
Watch Your Stress Level
High levels of stress can cause hair to fall out. If you think this is the problem, then you definitely need to find ways to eliminate or manage the stressors in your life. Exercise is one way you can reduce your stress levels and encourage total body health. Talking your problems over with a trusted counselor can also be a big help.
Check Your Rx
Certain prescriptions can cause excessive hair loss. Drugs like antidepressants, anticoagulants, and even birth control pills can lead to unwanted shedding. Speak to your doctor if you think your medication is causing your hair to fall out. Sometimes, he or she will be able to give you a different kind of medication.
Keep Hormones Balanced
Thyroid problems, as well as pregnancy, can lead to hormonal imbalances that encourage hair loss. A simple blood test can check your hormonal levels and tell your doctor if treatment is necessary. When you treat the imbalance, the hair loss should improve.
Treat Illness ASAP
Sometimes, illness caused by viruses or bacteria can cause hair to fall out. Colds and flu can stress the body and sap you of energy and nutrients. As a result, your hair may become brittle or not grow properly. See your doctor for treatment options if you're sick, and be sure to take it easy. A daily multivitamin and lots of healthy fruits and vegetables wouldn't hurt, either!
Don't Overstyle
Some people find that overstyling with heat implements leads to hair breakage and loss. Using a deep conditioner once a week and treating your hair more gently can minimize the damage and prevent you from losing more hair.
If you're experiencing hair loss or are worried that you might, see your doctor right away. He or she can teach you more tips for hair loss prevention and examine you to determine factors that may cause or encourage the problem.
